How the build was tailored

  • Work centres mapped one to one with the floor: coiling, grinding, furnace and finishing, each with OEE target, setup and cleanup time and cost per hour
  • A routed bill of material per part number, so releasing a manufacturing order creates the work orders in sequence on the right machines with expected durations

The company

This manufacturer has been making springs for over three decades. The range covers compression, torsion, conical, double conical and extension springs along with wire forms, produced on CNC coiling machines and finished through grinding, heat treatment and inspection. The customer list runs through the automotive supply chain, from Tier 1 assemblers up to vehicle makers, so every part number carries a drawing, a specification and a delivery schedule that does not move.

That is a demanding place to run a factory from spreadsheets.

What the business needed

A spring looks simple from the outside: one wire, one machine, one part. On the floor it is nothing of the sort, and discovery reflected that.

Traceability that survives an audit

Automotive customers ask which wire coil went into which dispatched box. That means carrying the raw material lot forward through coiling, furnace, grinding and finishing into a finished goods lot, without a parallel register kept by hand.

A routing that matches the floor

A part passes through coiling, grinding, furnace and finishing, each on a different work centre with its own queue. Planning against a single manufacturing bucket hides the real bottleneck.

Committed versus available

With schedules months ahead against a few large customers, the question was not how much stock there is, but given everything already promised, when the plant goes short and on which part.

Honest short production

A batch of 1,000 rarely closes at exactly 1,000. Setup pieces, rejections and stoppages mean the floor finishes 950 and owes the balance. The system had to keep that remainder alive as work, not quietly lose it.

Why Odoo 19 Enterprise

Ochre ran a working session with the team on a live Odoo 19 environment rather than a slide deck. Their own part, a coil spring supplied to a passenger vehicle OEM, was built up on screen from product master to bill of material to a released manufacturing order, and the flow was interrupted at the exact points where the current process breaks.

Odoo 19 Enterprise was chosen because manufacturing, inventory, sales and accounting sit in one database. For a plant of this size, the usual pattern of a production system bolted onto a separate accounting package is precisely what creates the reconciliation work the team wanted gone. Machine hour and setup time, not the wire, drive the cost of a small-diameter spring, so recorded durations per work order were the difference between quoting from experience and quoting from data.

Each machine group is its own work centre with time efficiency, an OEE target, setup and cleanup time, and a cost per hour. Capacity planning now reflects the real constraint instead of an average.

Every spring’s bill of material carries its components and its operation sequence, coiling through grinding, furnace and finishing, with an expected duration on each step. Release a manufacturing order and the work orders appear in sequence, already assigned to the right work centre.

Lot tracking where it earns its keep

Inventory

Products that need it are tracked by lot, so incoming wire is received against a lot and the finished spring closes against a generated lot. The traceability report walks the link both ways, from a wire coil to every dispatch it reached, and from a customer complaint back to the coil, the machine and the shift.

Work orders timed by the operator

Each operation is started, paused and completed on the work order, recording real duration against expected. Over a few weeks that comparison becomes the basis for correcting standard times, quoting new parts and finding the operations that consistently overrun.

Backorders instead of fiction

Manufacturing

When a manufacturing order closes short, Odoo splits it: the completed quantity is closed and consumed correctly, and a backorder order carries the balance with its own components reserved. Nothing has to be adjusted afterwards to make the numbers agree.

The forecasted inventory view reads confirmed sales orders and open manufacturing orders together and plots the projected position by date, flagging the day a part goes negative and which order drives it.
